As the first “level” you’re granted access to, Bob-omb’s Battlefield is notable for allowing you to encounter Mario in a 3D world for the very first time. The act of catching the wings that allowed you to soar around the level is still vivid in my mind. As someone who spent their childhood playing mario games in the 2D realm, this moment was absolutely mind-blowing. Following this release, the “platformer” subgenre underwent significant changes.
